What are Display Rules?
Display Rules let you define conditions that must be met for a survey to appear on your post-purchase pages. Without any Display Rules, a survey will be shown to every customer.
With Display Rules, you can target specific segments, for example, only new customers, only high-value orders, or only orders that contain a specific product.
Display Rules are available for surveys published to the Checkout app block channel (your Thank You and Order Status pages). They do not apply to other channels such as POS, standalone pages, or embedded surveys.
Available rule types
Customer type
Target surveys based on whether the customer is placing their first ever order or is a returning customer.
New customers: the survey will only appear for first-time buyers.
Returning customers: the survey will only appear for customers who have placed at least one previous order.
Order value
Target surveys based on the total value of the order. You can set:
A minimum value only (e.g. show for orders over $50)
A maximum value only (e.g. show for orders under $20)
Both a minimum and maximum to create a range (e.g. show for orders between $50 and $200)
The order value is the total amount at checkout in your store's currency.
Products in the order
Target surveys based on which products are in the customer's order. You can select specific products from your store and choose from the following operators:
Order contains any of: the survey shows if the cart contains at least one of the selected products.
Order does not contain any of: the survey shows if the cart does not contain any of the selected products.
Order contains all of: the survey shows only if the cart contains every one of the selected products.
Order does not contain all of: the survey shows if the cart is missing at least one of the selected products.
Payment method
Target surveys based on how the customer paid for their order. You can select one or more payment methods and choose from the following operators:
Is one of: the survey shows if the customer used any of the selected payment methods.
Is not one of: the survey shows if the customer did not use any of the selected payment methods.
The available payment methods are:
Shopify Payments
PayPal
Manual (e.g. cash on delivery, bank transfer)
DivideBuy
Need a different payment method?
If you use a payment gateway that isn't listed above, please get in touch and we'll add it for you.
Combining multiple rules
You can add more than one rule to a survey. When you have multiple rules, you can choose how they are combined:
All rules must match (AND logic): the survey only shows if every rule is satisfied.
For example, "Customer is new AND order value is more than $50".
Any rule can match (OR logic): the survey shows if at least one rule is satisfied.
For example, "Customer is returning OR order contains Product X".
You can add up to one of each rule type per survey (one customer type rule, one order value rule, one products rule, and one payment method rule).
How to set up Display Rules
Open the survey you'd like to configure in the survey editor.
In the Manage Visibility panel on the right-hand side, make sure the Checkout app block checkbox is enabled.
Click the Choose who sees this survey button.
In the modal that appears, select a rule type (Customer type, Order value, Products in the order, or Payment method) and click Add rule.
Configure the rule, for example, select "New customers" for a customer type rule, or enter a minimum/maximum for an order value rule.
To add additional rules, select another rule type from the dropdown at the bottom and click Add rule.
If you have more than one rule, use the dropdown at the top of the modal to choose whether all (AND) or any (OR) of the rules must match.
Click Save to apply the Display Rules.
Save your survey in the survey editor.
You can edit your display rules by clicking on the Edit who sees your survey button:
Viewing Display Rules at a glance
On the Your Surveys page, surveys published to the checkout app block will show badges summarising their Display Rules alongside the channel badge.
For example:
"Checkout app block" + "New customers"
"Checkout app block" + "Orders ≥ $50"
"Checkout app block" + "Contains Summer Collection, Beach Towel"
"Checkout app block" + "£30.00 - £200.00"
If a survey has multiple rules, the badge will show the number of rules (e.g. "2 display rules") with a tooltip showing the full details:
Checkout Display Settings
When you have multiple surveys published to the checkout app block, each with their own Display Rules, the Checkout Display Settings control how Grapevine decides which survey to show. You'll find these settings on the Settings page within the Grapevine app.
See our guide on Checkout display settings for more information.
Display Rules examples
Show a "How did you hear about us?" survey to new customers only
Create your attribution survey.
Enable the Checkout app block channel.
Add a Customer type rule → New customers.
Save.
Use this rule to show an attribution survey like "How did you hear about us?" only to first-time buyers, so you can learn which marketing channels are driving new customers without repeatedly asking the same question to people who've already answered.
Show a product feedback survey for a specific product
Create a product feedback survey.
Enable the Checkout app block channel.
Add a Products in the order rule → Order contains any of → select the product.
Save.
Use this rule to collect targeted product feedback by showing a survey only when a customer purchases a specific item, for example, asking buyers of a newly launched product what they think of it.
Show a VIP survey for high-value orders from returning customers
Create your VIP customer survey.
Enable the Checkout app block channel.
Add a Customer type rule → Returning customers.
Add an Order value rule → set minimum to $200.
Set the logic to All rules must match.
Save.
Use this rule to identify and learn from your highest-value customers, for example, showing a VIP experience survey only to customers who spend over $200, so you can understand what drives your most valuable orders.
Show a survey only to customers who used a specific payment method
Create your survey.
Enable the Checkout app block channel.
Add a Payment method rule → Is one of → select DivideBuy.
Save.
This could be useful for gathering feedback about a buy-now-pay-later experience, or for understanding how customers who pay via PayPal differ from those using Shopify Payments.
Understand why returning customers are placing smaller orders
Create your survey.
Enable the Checkout app block channel.
Add a Customer type rule → Returning customers.
Add an Order value rule → set a maximum of $30.
Set the logic to All rules must match.
Save.
Use this combination to investigate why loyal customers might be spending less than expected. By targeting returning customers who place low-value orders, you can ask whether they couldn't find what they were looking for, whether pricing influenced their decision, or whether something about their experience has changed.
This can help you to spot early signs of customer disengagement before you lose them entirely.
Requirements
Display Rules require the new checkout (app block compatible post-purchase pages). If your store has not yet migrated, you will see a message in the Manage Visibility panel encouraging you to upgrade.
You must have the Grapevine Surveys app block added to your Thank You and Order Status pages in the Shopify checkout editor.
FAQs
Do Display Rules work on both the Thank You page and the Order Status page?
Yes. The same Display Rules apply to both pages. Any survey published to the checkout app block will appear on whichever page the customer visits, provided the rules match.
Can I still target new or returning customers like before?
Yes. Customer type is one of the available Display Rule conditions. If you previously had a survey set to "New Customers" or "Returning Customers", this will continue to work. The new system gives you more options on top of that.
What happens if no rules match?
If the survey priority is set to Show the most relevant (the default), surveys without any Display Rules will be used as a fallback. If all your surveys have rules and none match, no survey will be shown for that checkout.
Can I use Display Rules with other channels like POS or standalone pages?
Display Rules are currently only available for the checkout app block channel (Thank You and Order Status pages). Other channels do not support condition-based targeting.
My payment gateway isn't listed in the payment method options. Can it be added?
Yes. The list of available payment methods is curated and we can add new ones on request. Please let us know the name of your payment gateway and we'll add it in for you.
