What is the Rating Grid question type?

Written by Steve Jones

The Rating Grid is a question type that allows you to ask customers to rate multiple items using the same scale, all within a single question. Instead of adding several individual rating questions to your survey, you can present them together in a clean grid format where each row is an item to be rated and each column is a point on your scale.

When to use a Rating Grid

The Rating Grid is ideal for on-site surveys where you want to collect structured feedback across several areas of your business in a single, easy-to-complete question. Common use cases include asking customers to rate:

  • Website ease of use, checkout experience, delivery and communication

  • Product quality, value for money and packaging

  • Customer service responsiveness, knowledge and helpfulness

  • Overall satisfaction across multiple touchpoints

It works particularly well as part of a longer multi-question survey. For example, you might open with a Rating Grid covering key areas of the customer experience, follow up with an open-text question for additional comments, and close with an NPS question to capture an overall score.

Because the grid presents all items together on a single scale, it is quicker for customers to complete than answering several separate rating questions, which can help to reduce survey drop-off.

How the Rating Grid is structured

A Rating Grid has two components:

Scale options (columns) are the rating labels that appear across the top of the grid. These define the scale that customers will use to rate each item. A default scale is populated automatically when you create a new Rating Grid question, but you can change the labels, add more options, remove options or reorder them to suit your needs.

Items to rate (rows) are the things you want customers to evaluate. Each item appears as a row in the grid, with a radio button under each scale option. You can add as many items as you need, reorder them, and optionally enable row randomisation to reduce order bias.

How results appear in reports

Rating Grid responses are displayed in the report view as a stacked horizontal bar chart. Each row in the chart corresponds to one of the items you asked customers to rate, and the coloured segments represent the proportion of responses for each point on your scale.

This gives you a clear visual comparison across all rated items, making it easy to spot which areas are performing well and which may need attention.
