This article will guide you through how to set up a Date based question in your survey.

Why use a date based question?

This versatile question type can be used to ask respondents any date related question as part of your survey, for example, you may run events as part of your business and may want to know which date the respondent attended the event.

You may wish to use the date based question to ask the customer for their date of birth, which would then allow you to add them to your Birthday email campaign, or use their age to create a segment of customers that might be interested in certain products or offers.

Selecting a date based question

If you are creating a new survey, select Date as the question type from the left hand-side of the survey editor screen and then click on the Get started button:

If you are editing an existing survey to add in a date based question, open the survey editor, click on the Add another question button on the left-hand side of the screen and then select Date as the question type from the dropdown:

The main configuration of a Date type question is simple and will take place within the Questions tab on the left hand-side of the survey editor:

Question settings

There aren't too many settings to the Date based question, just a question and sub text field (which is optional) and then the usual required and tagging settings.

The question and sub text fields are pre-filled, so that you can see how they will appear in the preview pane.

Please note:

The preview pane within the survey editor will update as you configure your question, allowing you to see how your survey will look across the various surfaces that you choose to publish your survey on.

Here is how the Date based question will appear in the preview pane with the default settings:

Settings explained

Question - Your question that explains why you'd like the respondent to select a date as part of the survey.

Sub Text - Optional wording underneath the Question field to provide additional context or guidance on what you'd like the respondent to do.

Required - If you have multiple questions in your survey, you may wish to make some questions optional. Enable the Required setting to make an answer to this question mandatory before the respondent can progress onto the next question.

Tagging - Both the Tag orders and Tag customers feature will apply the date selected by the respondent in the following format:

yyyy-mm-dd

You can also add a prefix in front of the tag to give the date selected some context when seen against the order or the customer, e.g. "Birthday: ". The tag will then appear something like this:

Date Format

It is not possible to change the date format within the survey question, however, the date picker tool will allow the majority of respondents to select a date regardless of how they prefer to format their dates.

Previewing your survey question

Take a look at your survey in the preview pane of the survey editor to test out your survey.

How the date question appears on your post-purchase pages may differ slightly depending on whether or not you have upgraded to Shopify's app block compatible post-purchase pages.

What next? - Managing the visibility of your survey

When ready, you can choose the channels on which to publish your survey by using the Manage Visibility section of the survey editor.

Please see our Managing the visibility of your surveys guide for details on the available surfaces.

That's it!
