This article will guide you through how to set up a single-choice question in your survey.

What is a single-choice question?

Also known as a closed-end question, a single choice survey question is best suited for when you'd prefer to offer respondents a predefined list of answer options. It's the most common survey question type for asking customers how they heard about you.

You also have the ability to add an "other" answer option to this question so that respondents can answer in their own words if none of your predefined answers apply to them. Let's get started.

Setting up your single-choice question

Start by creating a survey via the Create Survey button which will then take you into the survey editor screen:

The single-choice question type will be selected by default, so just go ahead and click on the Get started button:

The majority of configuration will take place within the Questions tab on the left hand side of the survey editor:

Deciding on your survey question

The first thing to consider is the information/insight that you are looking to gather. Will your survey be displayed after a customer has placed an order on your store or will you be directing the customer to a Standalone survey page at a later date? A large majority of our Merchants are interested in attribution and therefore begin by asking customers how they first heard about their store or brand.

We'll use this question as our example for this set-up guide, but you can ask any question that will help you to learn more about your customers.

Question fields and options

The preview pane within the survey editor will update as you configure your question, allowing you to see how your survey will look across the various surfaces that you choose to publish your survey on.

Question - Enter your question into this text field.

Sub Text - Optional wording underneath the Question field to provide additional context or guidance on answering the survey question.

Required - If you have multiple questions in your survey, you may wish to make some questions optional. Enable the Required setting to make an answer to this question mandatory before the respondent can progress onto the next question.

Display options as - This is where you can select the display format of the answer options. They can either be presented as radio buttons or as a dropdown list. We recommend that you select radio buttons, unless you have a very long list of answers:

Collapse sub options - If you have selected Radio buttons, a Collapse sub options setting will appear. Enabling this feature will hide answer sub-options until the parent answer option has been selected. This is particularly useful if you would like respondents to narrow down their selection but not be presented with a long list of options initially.

Placeholder text - When selecting the Dropdown list display option, a Placeholder text setting will appear. This is the default text which will appear in the dropdown box prior to an answer being selected:

Options - There's no limit to the number of answer options that a question can have. We do, however, recommend that you keep the list to a minimum to make it a quick and easy survey for a customer to consider responding to.

To add additional survey answer options, simply click on the + Add another option button.

Sub Options - Within each answer option is the ability to add as many sub options as you require. Sub options can be used to provide more granular answer options for respondents to select from.

For example, you may have an answer option called Social Media, and the sub options within that category might be: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.

Allow 'Other' option - this sub-option can be used as a freeform text box for the respondent to type in a unique answer. When enabled, this option can be used by respondents when none of the predefined sub-option answers meet their needs.

Please be aware that enabling the Other sub-option could open up your survey question to receive many unique responses which could make your data difficult to analyse and interpret.

We recommend that you check your Other answers regularly within the report view of Grapevine Surveys to identify any common answers that could be added as single-choice answer sub-options.

Other sub-option label - Allows you to customise the label. The default label will be Other.

Other sub-option input placeholder - The default placeholder text for the Other sub-option text box is blank.

Change this text if you'd like to ask for specific information from respondents.

To read more about the Allow 'Other' sub-option, please see the following article: Using the Allow 'Other' sub-option setting

As per the + Add another option button, you can keep clicking the + add sub option button to add as many sub options as you require.

Display the options in random order - In order to remove any bias related to the position that the answer options appear in, we have provided a setting to randomize the order of the answer options.

Please note: This will randomize top level answer options AND sub-option answer options.

Allow 'Other' option - Much the same as the Other Sub-Option this survey response option can be used as a freeform text box for the respondent to type in a unique answer. When enabled, this option can be used by respondents when none of the predefined main answer options meet their needs.

To read more about Grapevine Surveys tagging features, please see the following article:

Tag orders / Tag customers - A customer tag or order tag can be applied that represents the answer provided by a respondent. Prefixes can be used to identify the survey.
